Minutes Special Meeting June 17, 2014

The Salem Township Board of Trustees met June 17, 2014 for a special meeting at the Salem Morrow Fire Station Conference Room for the purpose of discussing items dealing with financial matters. President Heath Kilburn call the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. with members Kirk Ramsey and Ralph Blanton present. Also present were the Fiscal Officer, Debbie Harper, and from the Fire Department, Chief LaFollette and Assistant Chief Bill Harrison.

Ms. Harper had prepared reports and these were discussed and questions answered concerning them.

A/C Harrison brought up the financial strain that insurances has had on the fire department budget.
They now have only seven (7) volunteers and there is a constant turnover and the training of new volunteers and part timers is costly.

It has been normal to carry a roster of 35 employees. Now they are at 22 members.

The need for more full time employees was mentioned.

Harrison said there are some grants available, but they are harder to get now and fewer of them. There is a “Safer” grant that he is thinking about applying for.

The fact that it might be necessary to put a levy on the ballot was brought up. It was hoped that the old levy would gradually be enough to cover the operating expenses after the building was paid off, but with the increase in costs for supplies, training and insurances, it just doesn’t look like that will be the case.

A/C Harrison said he would redo his numbers and see what would be needed for a levy. He said they are looking at 6-7 mills right now.

With no further business to discuss, Ralph Blanton made a motion to adjourn at 8:44 PM. Heath Kilburn seconded the motion.
